Innovative eco friendly traps for the control of
Pine Lepidoptera in urban and recreational places
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Project objectives
The Pine Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) and Pine tree lappet (Dendrolimus pini) aremoths of the familiesy Thaumetopoeidae and Lasiocampidae, and are abundant species found in pinewoods in north, central and southern Europe, and an important economic pest and health human andpet problem (allergic, skin illness, etc). The species are notable for the behaviour of its caterpillarlarvae, which overwinter in tent-like nests high in pine trees, and which process through the woods innose-to-tail columns, protected by their severely irritating hairs.
Current methods to control this infestation have some limitations to control medium-large amounts ofthem and/or they are expensive. The main objective of LIFE PISA project is to demonstrate theviability of the combination of several systems currently used to control processionary and tree lappetpest to be applied in different urban orrecreational areas in 4 countries (Spain, Italy, UK and Greece), where the air or massive fumigation isnot possible. Moreover, it aims to improve current traps systems to increase significantly theireffectiveness, reduce cost and to be adapted to each selected demonstrative urban pineareas.
Decrease population of pine processionary and Pine tree lappet | Reduce significantly irritating injuries and allergic symptoms | Optimize the trunk barrier device to be easy mounting and dismounting | Trunk barrier system will have duration of 3 years without removing | Improve the design and efficiency of pheromone traps |
Traps with minimal visual effect and non-disturbing the life of other forest animals | Low cost (less than 25 ?/standard device), current cost is in the range of 33-40 ? / device. | Study efficiency of MD technologies in pines situated in open urban places. | Fulfill Directive 2009/128/CE related to the rational use of chemical pesticides. | Transfer knowledge to forest pest control authorities, town hall, neighbourhood associations |
